In 1972, many in the U. S. celebrated the first national holiday for fathers on the 3rd Sunday in June. Father’s Day this year is on June 21st and it is a day of celebrating our male figures and fatherhood. This may be a wonderful time to sit down and write a letter to your father or father figure. If this type of individual does not exist for you, then it might be a time to reflect on the relationships that you’ve had with your father or male influences that were positive.

This is the time to show appreciation and it’s also a different time for us in 2020 because we have been living with a stay-at-home order, unable to go out like we were a year ago. Maybe you can go fishing with your father since Go Fishing Day is on June 18th. Consider catching and releasing them. If fishing is not his thing, maybe it’s a time for gardening since the first full week of June is National Gardening Week. If going outside to fish or garden is not possible, perhaps you give your father/father figure more hugs or recall the hugs you’ve given in celebration of Hug Holiday Day on June 29th.

If neither of you are in a position to go out or if you are not in the same city or state, consider having a video conference call to see each other and spend some quality time talking and giving him your undivided attention. There are a range of things that you can do even if you can’t leave the home. I find that most importantly, people just want to know that they are thought of and to be shown love. Share the day with them showing them that you care and that they are important to you, even if it’s in memory of them. Happy Father’s Day!
