LBFE National – Relieving social isolation and loneliness
After watching both of my grandmothers suffer through their dementia diagnoses, I developed a greater empathy for our aging population and their many daily struggles. As we emerged from the pandemic, I felt certain there was more I could do to serve the elders in my community. I was overjoyed to discover the local chapter of a non-profit, Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly (LBFE), whose mission is to reduce isolation and loneliness among older adults. I have been part of LBFE’s “visiting volunteer program” for almost a year now, and have been paired up with an elder adult, Bessie, who I visit with several times a month. Bessie is a light in my life and her friendship has truly grown my heart.
